Having launched a competition in honour of Roald Dahl Day (13th September), David Wilson Homes teamed up with Stafford Children’s Art Club to invent a character named David Wilson using inspiration from Roald Dahl’s books, famously illustrated by Sir Quentin Blake.
Sophie was crowned the winner of the competition for her character, David Wilson, who carried a cheeky persona as a bricklayer, wore the appropriate hi-vis vest and hard hat, and had his golden retriever by his side – mirroring the renowned logo of the five-star housebuilder.
Under the guidance of Sarah Grateley, Stafford-based Children’s Illustrator, 14 children at the art club submitted entries to David Wilson Homes’ competition, and Sophie’s design stood out due to the resemblance to one of Roald Dahl’s characters.

Sarah said: “The children were so excited to take part in this competition and really got stuck in with designing the David Wilson character and thoroughly enjoyed creating their artwork in the sketchy style of Quentin Blake. Sophie’s winning character really captured his lively style and fitted the brief perfectly.”
Stafford Children’s Art Club is located close to David Wilson Homes’ developments, The Lapwings and The Catkins, and is hosted every Wednesday for children aged seven to 14-years-old at The North End Community Centre.
Sarah’s aim is to build confidence in art by using a wide range of materials and techniques, and to have some fun and relaxation.
For winning David Wilson Homes’ design competition, Sophie was awarded a £50 Amazon gift card.
Chanda Chileshe, Head of Sales at David Wilson Homes Mercia, said: “It was a pleasure to work with Sarah and the children at Stafford Children’s Art Club on this Roald Dahl-inspired competition.
“Whilst Sophie’s design stood out as the winner, we were impressed with the high quality of all the entries, and we hope the children had fun bringing the worlds of construction and stories together.”
