Last night’s second annual InStyle Imagemakers Awards marked a special moment in the 30-year friendship between Jessica Biel and her makeup artist, Kara Yoshimoto Bua. During the ceremony, the actress paid tribute to the pro’s visionary work with a heartfelt speech.
“Kara has been a huge influence on my image throughout the years,” Biel told InStyle ahead of the event. “She has defined all the most important events in my career, I believe, and in my personal life, including my wedding!” Biel continued, reflecting on their longtime partnership. “There’s trust, and creative collaboration, and we have so much fun together, which sets the stage for pure creative confidence and freedom.”

Naturally, the pair got ready for their big night together, with Bua doing Biel’s makeup to complement her look: a silky champagne asymmetrical top with a floor-length train and gray barrel-leg trousers.
“Since Jessica wore white, I wanted a healthy glow and to draw attention to her eyes,” explains Bua, who has been a Chanel beauty makeup artist for more than 15 years. Starting with skin, she enhanced Biel’s complexion with light coverage and sweeps of Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sun-Kissed Powder in Medium Coral and Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Jersey. She then used Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Noir Intense and Gris Graphite to create a thin, elongated “foxy little eye” drawn upward and outward. “This helped to bring out the beautiful, natural almond shape of her eyes,” says Bua. Finally, a gorgeous dusty rose lip combo—traced with Le Crayon Lèvres Longwear Lip Pencil in Beige Naturel and finished with a mix of Le Rouge Matte Lipstick in Rouge Jersey and Rouge Beige—completed the look.

Just the latest in their long lineup of collaborations, Biel was, of course, glowing.
“Our 30-year connection provides a level of trust that allows us to be ourselves and let it all flow creatively,” says Bua. “I have so much love for Jessica. It’s always easy to bring out her beauty—she’s a unique beauty, superhuman, and a dream to work with.”
Here, Biel walks us through her look, her pre-event playlist, and why Bua is such a dream friend and collaborator.
Her InStyle Imagemakers Look
Tonight, I’m going for a fresh, clean, classic kind of fashion look, so the hair and makeup can be the star of the show and can maybe be a bit more dramatic or heightened.

Her Playlist
I love listening to Sault Radio or Soultronic Radio on Spotify when I’m getting ready for an event.
Her Getting-Ready Crew
I love getting ready with my girlfriends. Sometimes they come over to hang during glam, even if we’re not all going to the same event. It’s fun to make an evening out of it and to enjoy some nice drinks and food together.

Her Bond with Bua
She is the person I trust the most when I’m trying out beauty trends or new styles, and she knows my face better than I do because we have a true personal connection that goes beyond makeup artist and client. We’re soul sisters on some level.
