The make-up artist for Bambie Thug has said the Cork star is the most talked-about act at the Eurovision and an “international sensation”.

Bambie, from Macroom, is the first non-binary artist to represent Ireland in the competition and has proved to be a huge hit with fans in Sweden, where the competition is taking place.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner, their make-up artist Amy Heeney McDonald said there is “incredible interest” in the singer across the world.

“I met them in RTÉ when they competed for the Eurovision, and I just found them to be so lovely,” she said.

Bambie then approached me and asked me to go with them to Malmo and it has been a crazy week.

“There is a lot of interest in Bambie; they are very expressive and different. The crowds really love their theatrical performance.”

A lot of work goes into every step of the performance, Ms Heeney McDonald said.

“Bambie is very clear about the look they want, and very expressive. Their costumes are so incredible; everywhere we go, people are loving the song and Bambie’s original style.

“Bambie is also a very kind person, very inclusive and creative — people love that about them.

“There has been a lot of publicity shots to do this week because it’s all about letting people get to know you, and what’s behind the performances.

“I am with them every day, we are full-on doing makeup, publicity shots, and interviews. I’ve been a makeup artist all my life and this is a whole new experience for me.”

Ms Heeney McDonald said she is confident that Bambie will do well in tonight’s Eurovision final and the exposure has brought a lot of interest to their door, as well as opportunities.

“Bambie is very honoured to be here, and it’s a huge stage to perform on; it’s watched by millions. There will be many opportunities for them.”

Amy has been a make-up artist at RTÉ for the past two decades and has worked with dozens of celebrities on several of the broadcaster’s programmes, including the Late Late Show.

“But there has been nothing like this,” she said. “This is so different, and to have the opportunity to work with the most talked-about Irish artist right now is great. I’ve no doubt they will go down a storm at the finals.”
