Last month, Waxwork Records announced the highly anticipated vinyl release of Dario Marianelli’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire score. Much like the film, which drew inspiration from the beloved 1980s animated series The Real Ghostbusters, the deluxe double LP features new artwork by JJ Harrison that pays homage to the classic cartoon.
As we pointed out in our original report, the LP’s gatefold artwork reimagines early production artwork of The Real Ghostbusters, recasting the original foursome with Frozen Empire’s Spengler family, swapping Slimer for the Hell’s Kitchen Sewer Dragon, and making use of the upgraded Ghost Trap, the FPV Drone.
For a refresher, find the original artwork below, which, for many of us, was a fixture of our childhood, adorning various products, including board games and television dinner trays.
Now, onto Harrison’s tribute, he’d offer a closer look at the art to Instagram, writing, “There were lots of little nods to Real Ghostbusters in the movie, so I wanted to include my own with a tribute to that fantastic original RGB art painted by Gabi Payn that they ended up using on board games, TV trays, and VHS covers when we were kids in the 80s. Mine pales in comparison to Payn’s, but it was so fun to do, and I knew diehard GB fans would get a kick out of the reference.”
Harrison also made note of a small change that had to be made at Sony’s request, adding, “In my sketch, Rudd started out silly and lifting up his sunglasses like Winston in the original art, but Sony nixed that as it wasn’t accurate to the film,” continuing, “If you watch the movie, though, Venkman does that exact thing with his sunglasses when they meet the big bad Garraka. Coincidence? I could have asked Gil Kenan, but maybe it’s more fun not to know.”
A must-have release for any Ghostbusters fan, Waxworks Records’ Frozen Empire deluxe double LP is available as an exclusive “Slimer” neon green colored vinyl, paying tribute to the iconic gluttonous ghost with a vibrant ectoplasmic green pressing and as the mesmerizing “Frozen Empire” splatter colored vinyl.
