The Lakes District Museum Society is partnering with local artist Dale Kalhood to offer a six-session Introduction to Oil Painting course this fall. Between Sept. 18 and Oct. 23, Kalhood – a retired teacher and accomplished artist who started painting about a decade ago – will instruct students in the theory, techniques, tips, and tricks of oil painting.
The six-week course will be held in the museum’s Heritage Gallery at 540 Highway 16 West in Burns Lake. In addition to passing on his knowledge of the subject, Kalhood will provide students with all the materials they need to create a work of art.
Museum society officials are excited to partner with Kalhood on this initiative.
“The cool thing about this course is that people don’t need to worry about buying paints, canvases, brushes, and other supplies to participate,” Michael Riis-Christianson, curator of the Lakes District Museum, said last week. “If they want to try creating with oils, they only need to register, pay the $125 course fee, and then show up for classes. Dale will provide all the materials and the knowledge needed to create an oil painting in six weeks.”
Riis-Christianson said the course is another example of the museum society’s efforts to promote local arts and culture.
“Last year’s Search for Burns Lake’s Centennial Artist built a greater awareness of the arts and artists here,” he noted. “This year’s GR8-by-8 Art Project has been a huge success, and offering art courses will build on that foundation. This area has so many talented creators. Most of them work in private but some of them, like Dale, are eager to share their knowledge and passion. We hope the Introduction to Oil Painting will inspire a new generation of artists here.”
