On the “City Lights” series “Speaking of Art,” local artists share insights into their influences, processes and experiences in town. This edition focuses on Atlanta watercolor artist Shannon Kelly.

Kelly paints with a hyper-realistic style, capturing minutiae in watercolor. Whether she’s painting “a portrait, doing an urban landscape, or painting animals, especially birds, which are my favorite,” she pays close attention to tiny details. “I like to think of my paintings as little moments that tell a bigger visual story,” she says, comparing her work to photographs. “It really limits your peripheral information and that invites you to look more deeply into the painting.”
