Court artist Mike O’Donnell from Co Kerry has covered some of the biggest trials in Irish history and says two near-death experiences have made him realise that art is central to his life

‘Destiny has been kind to me. I make a living from my art as a court artist, muralist and signwriter. Court art began when I was very young. I used to walk into Tralee court as a young boy and draw people there as I knew they used to sit still. It was pointless asking my brothers or neighbours to pose as, being from Kerry, all we would do is play football together.
At 18, I got a place in Cork’s Crawford College of Art & Design but went off and did teaching for a good number of years instead. I recall my late dad — to me a superb artist and creator — assuring me that I could do art afterwards.
