A man is under investigation after allegedly damaging centuries-old cave paintings for better social media photos in Spain.
The 39-year-old from Andalucia, in southern Spain, allegedly poured water on works of art dotting the Sierra Sur de Jaén mountain range, the Guardia Civil told CNN in a statement on Sunday.
Photographs of the damaged art were then posted to Facebook.
An investigation was launched in May after officers saw the post online.
The paintings were on limestone, a type of rock containing water-soluble salts. As water evaporated, salts would dissolve and come to the surface, causing “irreparable damage”, the Guardia Civil said.
