Fans were essential items for Edo citizens to endure the summer heat, but they were also stylish accessories for enjoying the design and important merchandise for Kabuki fans. Fan paintings, or uchiwa-e, used to make these fans, were also quite popular, and Kuniyoshi actively engaged in creating them. Despite being consumable items, there are few extant examples, and in this exhibition, we will introduce approximately 220 works, including about 100 pieces being exhibited for the first time. Please enjoy the delightful and refreshing world of Kuniyoshi’s fan paintings, a realm visually enjoyable and cool, yet often overlooked.
