This innovative initiative aims to attract artists from all over the world to the Algarve, expanding the local cultural scene.
The first resident, David Schmitt, also known as “Tuyo,” is an emerging German artist whose works are inspired by organic forms and archaic symbols, will be on display from 12 July.
The Algarve’s vibrant art scene gets a new boost with the launch of international artist residencies organized by GAMA RAMA, a creative hub and art gallery located in Faro. In collaboration with Estúdio Yucca, a multidisciplinary space located in Cabanas de Tavira, this initiative promises to bring artists from various parts of the world to the heart of the Ria Formosa, further enriching the cultural landscape of the region.
The GAMA RAMA gallery, already known for its dedication to the promotion of contemporary art, now expands its activities to include the curatorship of artistic residencies. “We are excited to start this project, which will not only attract talented artists to the Algarve, but will also position the gallery as a hub for creativity in the south of Portugal,” says Toma Švažaitė, co-founder of this space.
Schmitt is a self-taught emerging German artist who works with graphic design and is currently based in Barcelona. His artistic residency at Estúdio Yucca took place between May 11th and 22nd, during which time he was immersed in the natural beauty and tranquillity of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, with the opportunity to develop new works inspired by the local landscape.
David Schmitt describes his work as a fusion of organic forms and archaic symbols, aiming to capture a timeless dimension. “For me, art can be a means of reconnecting with the human experience, through archetypal forms and symbols that are repeated throughout history,” explains Schmitt.
