According to the RA, external, he was awarded an MBE in 2001 “for services to British Art in America”.
As part of the preparation for the exhibition, the gallery’s curator, Hannah Willetts, will spend time with the artist at his studio in London and have access to his archive.
The gallery, based in the town’s Treasure House building, is currently closed for a refurbishment.
It is due to reopen at the end of 2024.
Niall Adams, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s museums and archives manager, said: “There are some extraordinary artworks to share with our visitors in the exhibition.
“We can’t wait to reopen the gallery this winter and start our new exhibition programme.”
