New and more innovative approaches to the natural subject have
been redefined during the twentieth century by sustainable art,
which has garnered a lot of attention in recent years, reflecting a
growing awareness of environmental issues and the role of role in
increasing community engagement and sustainable practices.
Sustainable art
Sustainable art is a creative practice of making artworks that
are not dangerous to the environment.
It aims to raise awareness about climate change and other
environmental issues. Artists who

most eco-friendly art materials include recycled paper, reclaimed
wood, natural pigments, and organic fibres.

and spaces, including forest, mountains and fields.
The materials used were often the materials of the Earth,
including the soil, rocks, vegetation, etc.
Upcycled art is the practice of
repurposing recyclable waste in order to turn it from something
that is unwanted to a beautiful art piece. Upcycled art reduces
waste and shows how everyday items can be reused.
All these concepts together highlight creativity, sustainability
and a connection with the environment.
From Waste to Art
Sustainable art has turned into a powerful tool in the fight
against climate change in Azerbaijan.
A notable example of this is the “From Waste to Art”
international exhibition, which has made a significant impact on
the country’s art scene.
Since 2012, the international exhibition “From Waste to Art” has
been held in Baku’s Gala settlement.
During the past period, up to 200 creative people from 46
countries of the world, including Azerbaijan, presented their
wonderful works to the audience.
The artistic value of works made mainly from household waste is
that they clearly demonstrate that art is capable of processing and
“digesting” even waste.
The unique project draws attention to environmental problems of
the metropolis. To achieve this goal, each of the examples of art’s
graceful and awe-inspiring transformative power reveals secrets of
hidden beauty that are invisible at first glance.
In 2024, “From Waste to Art” gathered 12 foreign and 18 local
artists, invited from 9 countries.
The event was organized at the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev
Foundation with the support of Temiz Seher OJSC (Clean City), IDEA
Public Union, Icherisheher State Historical-Architectural Reserve
and QGallery.
The artists created works of art made from waste and unnecessary
items under the theme “Create for Peace”.
“From Waste to Art” Museum, established on the territory of the
Gala State Historical Ethnographic Reserve Ethnographic Reserve on
the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, displays
eye-catching art pieces featured at the exhibition.
In alignment with the Green Solidarity year and on the eve of
the COP29 conference, set to take place in Azerbaijan on November
11-22, this initiative once again reminds us of the importance of
environmental protection.
Artists from around the globe contributed to artworks that
address environmental challenges.
