Waterfronts have often been depicted as important elements in landscape paintings. Along the seaside, one can see various expressions of the sea, from the calm Seto Inland Sea to the turbulent Japan Sea, while inland lakes and rivers also undergo rich changes depending on factors such as location, season, and weather. Additionally, waterfronts have supported people’s lives and served as places for their activities. Harbors bustling with ships and factories, for example, serve as notable examples.
This exhibition focuses on landscape paintings with waterfront themes from the museum’s collection of modern and contemporary Japanese paintings. It is divided into four sections: “Lakes,” “Rivers,” “Seas,” and “Harbors.” Please enjoy a diverse world of artworks, each with its unique expression, ranging from the stage depicted to the techniques and materials used (such as oil paintings, Japanese paintings, prints, and watercolors).
