Preston art director putting local creatives on the national stage

“We couldn’t afford it in 2024, but this year – with the crowdfunding money plus a small contribution from each artist – we could apply and pay for a stand. The aim was to showcase and celebrate what we’ve been nurturing in Preston. The collective of 20 was called The Pearls, Preston, Lancashire, even though our contributors were from all over the North.

“It was a collective grown from the studios up. Artists who gave their time for free were supported by local people, and now they can see the fruits of that hard work and commitment, showcased in a national arena.”

Jayne is now collaborating with The Artistry House after director Andy Walmsley invited her to source and curate female, contemporary artists for the space. Jayne put out a call and within a week six artists had work installed.

“I’m really happy Andy asked for my input,” Jayne said. “Creative studios and exhibiting spaces are stronger when we work together and share expertise. I’m delighted to connect creatives throughout the city, especially when it opens opportunities for female artists who may not have had them otherwise.”

Jayne believes Preston’s contemporary art, alternative music and performing arts scenes are looking promising. “Creatives are not asking permission so much, which is great – but it’s a shame we’re not recognised for how much we do for free by the official funding bodies.”

Next up for Jayne is a solo exhibition at Blackpool’s Grundy Gallery in January, though she plans to continue supporting local artists and creative organisations.

“I’ll keep putting Preston on the map for hosting and fostering the creative energy that’s been around for so long. Personally, I’m feeling pretty smug about nurturing over 20 female painters for the last two years, plus all of the new visitors that brought to the city – some who had never been before”
