Earlier this year, Your Name animator Yoshitoshi Shinomiya announced that he would be directing Studio Outrigger’s upcoming anime drama film A New Dawn. Now, the animation team has unveiled a gorgeous new key visual for the movie.
An anime-centric X (formerly Twitter) hub called Anime News and Facts recently shared this artwork with its followers. The image showcases a dilapidated old building with Japanese-style architecture. A lone figure stands by a railing on the building’s roof. Notably, the artwork showcases a different location and character than the first teaser image, which depicts a woman standing before a billowing cloud of black smoke. Shinomiya recently presented the film at Cannes Film Festival‘s Annecy Animation Showcase, which features promising animated works and concepts from creators all over the world.

A New Dawn Marks Your Name’s Yoshitoshi Shinomiya’s First Written and Directed Film
Shinomiya has previously worked alongside critically acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai on a number of highly successful animated works, including Your Name, Children Who Chase Lost Voices and The Garden of Words. For Your Name, he is credited for animating the iconic “flashback” sequence, a critical moment for the film’s two main leads. A New Dawn marks a major turning point in Shinomiya’s career, as he is not only directing the animated feature but also writing its screenplay.
Cannes’ official site describes A New Dawn’s story as follows: “The Obinata Fireworks Shop Factory is getting prepared for administrative action for confiscation tomorrow. It has been six years since Keitaro has been holed up in a closed-down factory creating fireworks by himself, chasing after an illusion of his father who vanished. It is a story about three young people who overcome the extreme weather conditions, disasters and environmental problems imposed on them and establish their own identities.”

Upcoming Anime Film A New Dawn Was Inspired by Japan’s Changing Landscape
According to Shinomiya, he began creating plans for A New Dawn in 2016. At that time, he had started noticing Japan’s evolution and the significance it would hold for future generations. Shortly after the film’s announcement, Shinomiya described how he was inspired by a certain conversation with a young child. “One day, a child found a ‘sea’ in a gap in the woods and asked me a question. It was an array of solar panels that looked like nothing if you stared at them,” said Shinomiya. “I felt that the sensibility of the next generation, who gave a new interpretation to the negative and changing landscape of Japan, was very meaningful to me.”
Shinomiya is partnering with three major animation studios for A New Dawn. Asmik Ace, which has facilitated the production of hit anime series like Library Wars and Black Butler, is producing the film alongside Studio Outrigger (Egumi Legacy, A Turtle’s Shell is a Human’s Ribs). Additionally, a France-based production house called Miyu Productions (Ghost Cat Anzu) is co-producing A New Dawn. The film’s theatrical release window is currently set for 2025. In the meantime, Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name is available to stream on Crunchyroll and Prime Video.
