Fan-favorite artist Ryan Stegman discusses his upcoming run on X-Men and the experience of “redefining” one of the most iconic mutant heroes of all time.

Speaking to AIPT Comics, Stegman was asked about his unique take on iconic X-Men leader Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, specifically regarding the character’s bold yellow-on-black costume and its “chunky” visor. “Well, you just try to keep the iconic aspects of him intact while putting your own spin on them,” Stegman responded. “So the chunky visor thing — I just thought we had this era of kind of downplaying the visor.”

Stegman continued, “To me, the idea behind it is it’s a little more like there’s an onboard computer in that visor that he can use for various purposes to see like 360 or something. Just cool stuff like that because that technology exists now.” Stegman went on to note that he landed on Cyclops’ new color scheme thanks to his innate desire to give each member of the new lineup a signature color in order to avoid “the thing where they all have this unified uniform.”

The upcoming X-Men series is one of several that will be ushering in a new era for Marvel’s mutants. Over the past year, readers have followed along as the anti-mutant organization known as Orchis waged war on not just their purported targets, but the entirety of the Marvel Universe. In bringing about the rise of the near-omnipotent Dominion called Enigma, formerly Nathaniel Essex, Orchis very nearly cemented their place as the penultimate villains in Marvel history. Thankfully, concerted efforts by the surviving mutants cleared the way for the Phoenix Force to lay waste to Enigma once and for all.
