The last time The Local Voice asked a local artist to create cover for our Double Decker edition was 2019, before the pandemic threw us all for a loop. Now, five years later, we are thrilled to introduce Ruth Hogue.
Ruth will be selling her artwork near the storefront of Square Books, Jr., so stop by and pay her a visit Saturday, April 27 at the Double Decker Arts Festival!
Tell us about yourself!
My name is Ruth Hogue, I’m a 25-year-old Oxford local and a painter. I am currently working towards my bachelor’s in fine art at Ole Miss and am establishing myself as an artist here in town.
How would you describe your art style?
I would describe my art style as being very colorful and impressionist. I’ve been legally blind since age thirteen and struggle to see details, so I end up emphasizing color as that’s what I use to interpret the world around me.
Where can people find/purchase your art?
I will be selling my art (both original and prints) at both Double Decker and Southern Punk Archive’s Punker Decker at the Powerhouse on Sunday, April 21st. You can also get in touch with me via my Instagram, @vestigial.leaf and through my email, ruthc.hogue@gmail.com. I will be dedicating my summer to commissions so please feel welcome to reach out!
What was your inspiration for the Double Decker cover art?
My mother, Kathleen Hogue, is a fiber artist and hand-sews these cute stuffed animals in miniature clothing that she ALSO hand-sews, and used to embroider Beatrix Potter-esque animals on the Sunday dresses she used to make for us. I’ve always loved her work and have always found so much joy in emulating her style, and just decided to go with it!
I’m so grateful to be involved with The Local Voice! Many thanks to Nature and Newt, they are the best and I loved getting the opportunity to work with them.
