Creative residents keen to push the boundaries of their artistic practice can explore and experiment with different techniques in a porcelain masterclass led by visiting ceramic artist Juz Kitson.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of hand-building and surface decoration to create a unique porcelain object in the hands-on session to be held on Saturday 31 August.

Juz is a multidisciplinary artist who recently completed a commission, She walks in beauty of the night, for the Bundaberg Regional Galleries Collection.

Featured in the current exhibition XX, the delicate piece combines porcelain, raku clay and black oxide to reference the charred landscape of wallum scrub after burning, with detailed decorative elements that mirror regrowth and recovery.

Bundaberg Regional Council’s Arts, Heritage and Asset Management portfolio spokesperson Councillor John Learmonth said the masterclass was an opportunity for local artists to gain valuable insights.

“Juz will offer practical demonstrations and show masterful skills, while encouraging participants to experiment and try new techniques,” Cr Learmonth said.

“Hosting instructive and inspirational workshops like this is one of the ways Bundaberg Regional Galleries is supporting our dynamic local arts community.”

Cr Learmonth said the workshop would include technical skills and discussion about incorporating ceramics with other materials, as well as exploring different ways of installing finished artworks.

“At the end of the class, participants will take home their own unique, hand-built clay sculpture,” he said.

“What a wonderful opportunity to be inspired and then see your inspiration take form, all the while guided by an accomplished artist.”

XX, an exhibition of contemporary ceramics by female artists, is on display at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery until Sunday 8 September.
