NATCHITOCHES, La. (KSLA) – The public is invited to enjoy the work of an award-winning pop-surrealist artist on the NSU campus.
On June 20, starting at 5 p.m., award-winning pop-surrealist artist and Northwestern State University (NSU) assistant professor, Edgar Cano Lopez will host an Open Studio event in room 105 of the University Printing building on NSU’s campus.
Cano will showcase 70 pieces of art and discuss his work with all who attend. He works in many mediums and is recognized for colorful, large-scale paintings that have been shown in competitions and exhibits internationally.

Achievements:
- Cano has had work included in the Masur Museum of Art in Monroe’s 61st annual juried show.
- In January, one of Cano’s pieces won Best in Show at the annual Surreal Solan Soiree at the Baton Rouge Gallery.
- His work and exhibition have also been recently featured in Juxtapoz Magazine.
- A painting by Cano was named winner of the Grand Jury Award for Season 20, a biennial 2023 juried competition hosted by Manifest, a contemporary arts center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
- Designed a mural at the Ben D. Johnson Education Center in Natchitoches, entitled “Seeds of Hope”
Cano’s cinematic-like compositions reflect his beginnings as a professional artist in Mexico when he was creating backdrops for theatre productions.
Since coming to NSU, Cano has earned his master’s degree in 2021 and joined the faculty in 2022. He has immersed himself in the community with his portrait work, demonstrations, and exhibitions.
