DNEG’s senior concept artist Paolo Giandoso just shared a behind-the-scenes look at his contributions to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which included designing the film’s big bad, Garraka.
Uploaded to Giandoso’s ArtStation, the malevolent phantom god is depicted pretty closely as it appears in the film. However, the photos provide a large, high-res view, highlighting the gaping mouth and near-skeletal frame to more minute details, including fine hairs across the body and the tattered texture of the cloth on the lower half.
Admitting to “loving every minute” of the design process, Giandoso also uploaded a look at a concept for Garraka’s “ghostly form” and a few up-close shots of Garraka’s source of strength, his twisted horns, writing, “working on the horns was fun, as I heard my design was eventually cast in resin for the set.”
In touching on Garraka’s power, the otherworldly Death Chill, Giandoso also showed variations of the ice breath and, in somewhat of a spoiler for those who’ve yet to watch the film yet, different formations for the Fire Master powers.
This isn’t the first time we’ve highlighted Giandoso’s work, as he previously worked on Ghostbusters: Afterlife as a concept artist, imagining Gozer’s grand return, with one scrapped concept covering the Sumerian god in an ectoplasmic shroud.
Another idea that didn’t make it past the early design phase was of Gozer meeting its ultimate demise in the film’s climax, suggesting that it could begin to lose control of its chosen form, potentially exposing its true essence—if such a thing even exists. After all, Egon does mention that Gozer is “whatever it wants to be.”
