Frank Stella, an artist who achieved early fame with a series of monochromatic paintings that helped establish minimalism as an alternative to abstract expressionism in the late 1950s, then spent the next 50 years creating colorful works that seemed to repudiate his youthful principles, died May 4 at his home in Manhattan. He was 87.
