More Jordan Rakei More Jordan Rakei

Jordan Rakei, the New Zealand-born, Brisbane-raised, London-based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and producer, is the first artist in residence at the prestigious Abbey Road Studios.

Rakei is a critically acclaimed jazz-fusion and soul artist. Before moving to London in 2014, he released a string of stunning EPs, but while he’s lived overseas, he’s released four successful albums: Cloak (2016), Wallflower (2017), Origin (2019), and What We Call Life (2021).

Rakei will lead the studio’s new project as it becomes a space to build a wider music community and foster creativity. He’ll have access to the entire Abbey Road building and is trusted to handle the “treasure trove” of the studio’s gear, including microphones and instruments. Plus, he’ll get to utilise a dedicated writing room.

In addition to the physical aspects of being Abbey Road’s artist in residence, Rakei will participate outreach programs and the studio’s content.

“I aim to make the most of this opportunity by providing a platform for artists who wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to work in a studio like Abbey Road,” Rakei wrote on Instagram. “I want to support others who may be starting their musical journey, fostering an environment where their creativity can flourish without constraint.

He continued, “I envision the studio as a vibrant hub for collaboration with the bubbling global music scene – where artists from diverse backgrounds and genres can come together, with me, to create freely, without the pressure of expectations.

“This residency is not just about creating music; it’s about building a community and celebrating the joy of artistic expression. I want to embrace making music for fun again!”

Sally Davies, Managing Director of Abbey Road, added (via the Abbey Road Studios website), “We are thrilled to welcome Jordan Rakei as our first-ever artist in this role. Jordan’s exceptional talent and unique approach to music embodies the spirit of innovation that Abbey Road Studios has always championed.

“I’m excited to see how this role unfolds, enhancing the creative legacy of Abbey Road Studios and setting new benchmarks for musical innovation and collaboration for years to come.”

The news arrives ahead of Rakei releasing his fifth album, The Loop, via Decca Records – his first on the label – on Friday, 10 May. You can pre-order the album here.
