Artist Pádraic Reaney returns to the Kenny Gallery in Galway City this Friday evening, May 17, with a new and diverse exhibition of paintings and sculptures.
The works being shown reflect his deeply-held interests – from the impact of previous generations on the landscape to the remnants of island life.
Pádraic’s art explores the haunting beauty of ruins, and of skulls, as well as the layers of history that are revealed through archaeological strata.
Inspired by the West of Ireland landscape and the mythological figures connected with it, his paintings and sculpture weave elements of folklore, history and personal reflection, all underpinned by a deep connection to his surroundings.
The artist, who was born in Carraroe and now lives in Moycullen, was mentored as a young man by renowned sculptor Oisin Kelly and then embarked on his own creative journey that led him to explore various media, from painting and sculpture to graphics and more.
That multidisciplinary approach is reflected in his work. His paintings, which are rich in texture and colour, capture the beauty and bleakness of the West of Ireland. His sculptures, crafted from bronze, stone, and ceramic, reveal a mastery of form and composition, with each piece telling its own story.
Pádraic’s work has been critically acclaimed, from his widely praised Inis Áirc Project, based around the deserted buildings of Inishark, to his various collaborations with creatiive writers. It has featured in exhibitions in the UK, Europe, North America and beyond, and is in private and public collections.
His new exhibition will be officially opened by broadcaster and lecturer Aodh Ó Coileáin at 6pm this Friday, May 17, at the Kenny Gallery in Liosbán, and all are welcome.
