Self-taught artist Dirty Hans’ exhibition opens on June 28 at Windermere Fine Art Gallery, with him present to discuss his work.

The display is the only place outside of London where his new work can be seen.

Previous work by the artist includes pieces featuring King Charles dressed as Elvis and Queen Elizabeth on a motorcycle.

Dirty Hans’ latest pieces show historic characters escaping their frames – in one piece, a woman smoking a cigarette sets the picture frame alight.

Another, part of a couplet titled ‘Love Hurts’, depicts a World War II era woman firing a gun from her frame and the bullet piercing a man’s heart-shaped helium balloon in an adjoining piece.

Before gaining recognition, Dirty Hans, originally from St Helens and residing on the Wirral, discovered his talent while playing truant from school.

In his garage hideout, he painted on boxes, selling his work on eBay before being picked up by galleries in his mid-20s.

The owner of Windermere Fine Art, Dawn Titherington, said: “We have worked with Dirty Hans since we first opened three years ago, and his work is always highly popular.

“His latest work is so inventive and different to his existing style.

“It’s an honour to have him in the gallery in person, and we can’t wait to launch this exhibition.”

Mr Hans said: “I love to experiment with my art.

“My approach is to deconstruct art and I was looking at traditional portraits from hundreds of years ago and thinking how I could deconstruct them to create something innovative and playful and this is where my latest collection was born.”

The show in Windermere is the only exhibition outside of London where the artist’s new work can be viewed.

Located at 25 Crescent Road, Windermere, LA23 1BJ, the gallery will display the collection from June 28 to July 12, with a VIP opening night from 6pm.

Art fans can secure a place on the guest list by contacting Windermere Fine Art Gallery.
