In partnership with the Kent Total Eclipse 2024 committee, the city of Kent Parks and Recreation department will host its Kent Total Solar Eclipse Mural Unveiling on Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m. in Heritage Park.
The Kent Total Solar Eclipse Mural was created by local Kent artist Jen Florentine and is designed to commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime event here in the heart of Kent. This mural will remain long after the Total Solar Eclipse has passed, serving as a reminder of the event.
Partners who helped fund this project include The Henry V. and Frances W. Christenson Foundation, the Kent Rotary Foundation, and The Simons Foundation.
This work was made possible by the Simons Foundation and is part of its ‘In the Path of Totality’ initiative. The Simon’s Foundation’s Science, Society and Culture division seeks to provide opportunities for people to forge a connection to science. In addition, five eclipse-themed public artworks have been installed on five different buildings on N. Water St. and S. Water St. in downtown Kent. A public call for entries was made inviting artists of all abilities, backgrounds and generations to submit their interpretation of a total solar eclipse. Five artworks were selected by the committee, images were then sent to Advanced Displays to print them as alumigraphic prints. This substrate allows the works to be applied to the side of each building as a temporary installation.
April Bleakney’s “Planetary,” Danny Likar’s “River Eclipse,” Mike Hovancsek’s “Approaching Totality,” Kristen Mimms Scavnicky’s “An Ichi Shadowscape” and Melissa English Campbell’s “Woven printed fabric inspired by the eclipse photography of Rick Fienberg,” are now on display for all to enjoy through June, 2024.
