Artist Lucy Loveheart’s work is loved around the globe. Here she shares her Super Seven cultural picks from Jane Austen to Japanese kimonos
Lucy Loveheart’s charming paintings depicting beautiful landscapes, famous buildings and magical worlds have made her one of Norfolk’s most well known and successful artists.
Her work can be seen in galleries, households, shops and public buildings across the land and her range of children’s books, created with her mum, are sold around the world. Brought up in a creative household, her father was an artist and her mother would make up fairy tales and introduced her to the enchanted worlds of Narnia and Neverland. Her work today is strongly influenced by those precious childhood memories of such magical worlds.
Here she shares some of the favourite things which inspire and entertain her.
What I am wearing
When at work I wear paint and glitter splattered overalls as it can be quite a messy procedure. If not in my overalls, I love dressing up and wearing something with a bit of sparkle or faux fur. I was invited to exhibit my paintings in Japan and picked up a cheap silky kimono. It is pale green with pink cherry blossom patterns and very pretty. I feel like a butterfly when I’m wearing it. It makes a dreary grey day feel fabulous.
What I am reading
I am currently re-reading Pride and Prejudice. I’m working on a painting inspired by the book for Chatsworth House, the inspiration for Pemberley, trying to capture the restrained chemistry between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy with the magnificent house as the backdrop. Jane Austen is a genius, sharp-witted and skilful.
What I am listening to
I’ve always loved singing and sing along to everything and anything. Once in a blue moon, I sing in a band called Lucy and The Brothers Swing. We’ve not played for a while, but I’m hoping we might play later this year so I’m warming up my vocal chords crooning along to some vintage classics by Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London, Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra.
What I am listening to
When I am drawing I need absolute silence to concentrate, but once I’m painting, I listen to what my mood fancies. A go-to favourite is Dessert Island Discs. I’m always inspired by the castaways’ life stories and musical selections.
Where I am going
I’m looking forward to my annual pilgrimage to marvel at a carpet of snowdrops at Walsingham or some enchanted Norfolk woodland.
What I am watching
I am hoping to see the Mary Poppins film soon. I’ve been absolutely gripped by the BBC1 adaptation of ‘Les Miserables’. A heartbreaking, heart aching tale which is utterly beautiful and brilliantly acted.
