A seaside town is undergoing an artistic makeover with a new exhibition inspired by love, life, and local talent.

The first-ever Contemporary Kent Artists (CKA) exhibition series opened in Whitstable yesterday (Wednesday).

Some 20 artists are showing original works based on the theme “The Love That Lasts Longest” – part of a quote by writer W. Somerset Maugham, who spent time in Whitstable as a child.

Events will be held across three venues, including The Boatyard at Shepherd Neame’s Duke of Cumberland pub in the High Street, The Horsebridge Arts Centre, and the Bruce Williams Gallery.

Whitstable art enthusiast Maxine Russo, who devised the event with her partner, Margate-based artist James Gilgunn, said: “This series of exhibitions is so important as it offers local artists exposure to a wide Kent audience, enhancing the visibility of Kent artists as well as enlarging their reputation far beyond the local artistic community.

“We want to develop a series of annual exhibitions which promote and highlight the diverse, interesting and unique practice of Kent artists.”

There will also be a competitive edge with event sponsors Shepherd Neame handing out the first-ever Shepherd Neame Kent Artist Award.

The Contemporary Art Academy is sponsoring the second prize, and visitors will be able to vote for a People’s Choice winner.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at The Boatyard on Sunday, October 19, accompanied by music from The Wallis Collection.

Shepherd Neame boss Jonathan Neame said: “We are delighted to support the CKA exhibition series and sponsor the inaugural Shepherd Neame Kent Artist Award.

“The Duke of Cumberland will also be at the heart of the event, hosting a number of exhibitions and performances in its Boatyard events space.

“We are committed to supporting our communities, and this event offers a fantastic opportunity to attract visitors to the town and showcase local creative talent.”

Alongside the main shows, there will be a packed programme of music, spoken word, and supporting exhibitions, plus collaborations with East Kent Open Houses and the Whitstable Artists Forum until October 21.
