Christian Hip-Hop Artist Changes Fun Lyrics To Life-Changing Ones After Deadly Accident

Christian hip-hop artist Canon shifted the focus of his music from being lighthearted to life-changing after nearly losing his life in an accident.

Aaron McCain, known as “Canon,” was raised in a Christian home. His grandfather was a pastor, and the church he grew up in felt like family. However, as a teenager, he sought a personal relationship with God and started attending another church. He found his place in a hip-hop church and discovered a sense of belonging, which encouraged him to pursue rapping.

As Canon chased his dream, he admitted, “It was difficult to find the balance between being a part of the world but not of it.” Additionally, he faced pressure as a teenager in college, surrounded by unbelievers with different lifestyles. Despite these challenges, he chose to live a holy life for God and stood firm in his faith.

Meeting Lecrae & Accident

Later, Canon met Lecrae and engaged in discipleship, learning valuable lessons from the renowned rap artist on managing his career as a Christian. However, Canon also struggled with self-doubt, feeling overshadowed by someone as great as Lecrae. Despite being close to the popular Christian rapper, Canon felt he would never have his breakthrough. Nevertheless, he continued to rely on God even more.

At 25, after Canon got married, he experienced a horrific accident. While trying to assist men whose truck had overturned on a highway, he overheard someone mention gasoline and a possible explosion. Panicked, Canon tried to jump over to the other side of the highway for safety, unaware that it was a dead end. Consequently, Canon fell from the 35-foot highway.
