KENNETT SQUARE — The Community Mural at Kennett Library is now a reality. Al Moretti has begun bringing historical community figures to life with vibrant colors.
Kennett Library’s Board of Trustees and Art Committee knew that they wanted a mural that respectfully reflected a historical, panoramic view of Kennett and its surrounding communities. They began by issuing a Call for Artists, which resulted in twenty-four talented artists, locally and nationally, submitting designs for the mural. The committee initially selected four finalists; of those four, Al Moretti emerged as the winning muralist.
Chris Manna, Executive Director of Kennett Library, said, “Our community has a storied history. This mural directly results from community engagement, and our selected artist truly understands our community feedback. We look forward to unveiling this mural for all to see and enjoy for generations to come.”
Al Moretti, an accomplished jazz musician and painter, is a Pennsylvania native. He was born in Chester, grew up in Ridley, and is now a resident of West Chester. In 1972, he did his student teaching at Kennett High School and later became the school’s assistant band director under director Pat Canfield. Al’s father was a professional musician who, coincidentally, played saxophone on one of the first rock and roll hits, “Rock Around the Clock,” with Bill Haley and the Comets. Al deeply admired his father’s musical talent and followed in his father’s footsteps but, instead, chose to master the trumpet.
In blending his two artistic passions, his creative decisions are guided by elements such as rhythm, articulation, dynamics, phrasing, and harmony. Each art form influences the other, creating a seamless connection and a more conceptual approach to his work.
Al Moretti’s artistic creation is a tribute to the historical significance, cultural richness, and exceptionalism of Kennett Square and its neighboring communities. “It is my hope,” Al said, “that this Community Mural will be a source of pride for Kennett’s current residents and future generations.”
The Community Mural is expected to be completed within the month.
