A talented boy from Cavan has been shortlisted for the AIB Young Portrait Prize.

Adam Wiercioch Chinatamunnee has made the shortlist with a colourful oil pastel on paper portrait called ‘My Mother’.

The eight-year-old is one of just 20 young artists still in the running after hundreds of applications from young people aged three to 18 years. Each of the 20 shortlisted artists will have their creations professional framed.

Five winners (one from each respective age category and an overall winner) will be selected. The winners will receive a bespoke art box and a cash prize, while the overall winner will be awarded a personalised wooden box of high-quality art materials and a cash prize of €500.

This year’s AIB Young Portrait Prize judges are: Ashwin Chacko, author-illustrator and motivational speaker, Emmalene Blake, a visual street artist, renowned for their large-scale portraits and Sheena Barrett, Head of Research and Learning at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

Adam’s work and that of the other 19 shortlisted artists will be exhibited at the National Gallery of Ireland between November 9 and March 9, alongside those shortlisted in the AIB Portrait Prize.

The winners of both competitions will be announced at a ceremony held in the National Gallery of Ireland on November 27.
