Amelia Lancaster has been photographing the National Theatre and surrounding South Bank area since 2003. The artist and photographer, who trained as an architect and set designer, has an eye for striking brutalist shapes. “The beauty of the National Theatre is that it hasn’t been ruined,” she says. “It’s pure concrete planes at different levels and angles – a trio of concrete, sunlight and shadows.” Mostly shot on 35mm film, Lancaster’s images, currently on show at the National, are then abstracted from their surroundings to create new geometric compositions. “The shadows completely change throughout the year. My favourites are in high summer, where you get these perfect triangles and the building looks golden.”
