AI has grown in leaps and bounds over recent years with the incredible advancements in technology – but it isn’t quite all the way there yet in many ways.

One of those ways is in AI-generated artwork, where the computer processes just haven’t quite figured out the details yet.

Nonetheless, that fact hasn’t stopped people from using AI programs to generate art, but the outputs are best used for fun.
You know, not on a national broadcast that will be watched by hundreds of thousands of people and certainly not by a network owned by a billion-dollar company that certainly should be able to afford an actual artist.
During Thursday night’s NHL playoff game between the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes, Rogers Sportsnet decided to use a picture of N.Y. goaltender Igor Shesterkin making a diving save amid a whirlwind of pucks.
The only thing that the poorly crafted image generated was a whirlwind of mockery and complaints, especially online.
“Imagine being a multi-billion dollar organization and proudly displaying some low effort AI garbage,” one user commented on a Reddit post featuring the image.
“’Why pay graphic designers when you can get any picture for free?’ – out of touch suits,” another said, taking a jab at the telecom giant.
“This is awful … On one hand, I can’t believe someone at Sportsnet okayed this. On the other hand, it’s Sportsnet.”
“This is pure nightmare fuel. you zoom in and everything is just wrong,” a user wrote.

Commenters were quick to point out and break down the flaws in the artwork – of which there were many.
“Man has an ear for eye,” one of the top comments pointed out
“They aren’t pucks… They’re… Rollerblade wheels?”
“Stick is held backwards too! Lol”
“His blocker is a leg pad, lol. Not to mention his pads are on backwards. It’s such garbage.”
“The players in the top right are just legs and torsos. Definitely AI.”
As anyone who has seen AI-generated artwork before knows, one of the biggest issues is with words and text. This one was no different.
“Oh yeah, look at the ‘text’ on that helmet logo. No chance that’s not AI art,” one user commented while another asked “Why do the words on the mask look like Hebrew? Lmao.”
While the picture of Shesterkin may have looked terrible, his play was spectacular in Game 3. The Rangers goalie made 45 saves on 47 shots in a 3-2 overtime win as his team took a 3-0 series lead over the Carolina Hurricanes.
