Not gonna lie: The first thought that comes to mind when gazing at Kathryn Keller’s painting, “Endurance,” is the collection of stately oaks dotting LSU’s campus.
Which seems more than appropriate that the painting is on exhibit in the LSU Museum of Art in the Shaw Center for the Arts, 100 Lafayette St. It’s featured in the exhibit, “Southern Reflections: Art by Kathryn Keller and Shirley Rabé Masinter,” running through Nov. 17.
And Keller’s painting of stately oaks is just one highlight of this small show pairing her work with that of Shirley Rabé Masinter’s.
Both artists work in oil and watercolor and share a passion for rendering landscapes. And both depict familiar southern scenes in their paintings. Their individual styles, however, are distinct in terms of technique, palette and intent.
Keller’s quiet, diminutive paintings focus on pastoral environments, rendered in an impressionistic style. In contrast, Rabé Masinter focuses on cityscapes, crafting realistic urban tableaux.
Museum hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday; 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 for age 13 and older and free for age 12 and younger, university students and veterans and their families with military ID.
