The city of Aspen held its second annual Art Cart Alpine Rally on Saturday night outside the Aspen Recreation Center. Sledders went head-to-head in their custom crafts down the Whoa Nelly Sledding Hill, the crashes often more memorable than the wins.

With two divisions — adults and 16-and-under — and a $1,000 prize (plus a buckle) going to the fastest craft as well as the best designed craft in each category, the city was able to create a $4,000 purse.

Sam Rose, as “The Groundhog,” won for fastest adult cart. As “The Goofy Goobers,” Cole Ryan and Wyatt DeVito had the fastest youth cart.

As “Super Venison,” Chase Ellsperman won for most creative adult cart, and Sydney Farrell, as “The Little Drummer,” won for most creative youth cart.

“We are excited to host an event that celebrates Aspen’s unique character and sense of tradition,” said Wesy Armour-Cook, special events assistant manager, in a news release. “A special thank you to all of our volunteers, participants, and spectators for making the event a memorable experience.”

Sam Rose, a member of Aspen City Council, holds up his belt for winning “fastest craft” in the adult division at the city of Aspen’s second Art Cart Alpine Rally on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, outside the Aspen Recreation Center. The win also came with a $1,000 prize.
