Did you get a camera for Christmas but haven’t used it yet? If you’d like to explore Luxembourg with it, record your life through pictures, or just appreciate nature via a lens, then spring affords some of the best sunsets and sunrises.

We’ve put together a list of places that offer photography courses to keep you up to shutter speed with your techniques.

Light Leaks Festival 9-12 May – beginner street photography workshops

Rotondes hosts Light Leaks Festival, formerly the Street Photography Festival annually in May, with the 8th edition taking place 9-12 May. It celebrates the visions of documentary and street photography, and includes a conference with guest speakers, exhibitions featuring local and international talent, and various workshops from a beginner street photo workshop to the legal aspects of street photography, or the chance to hone your skills on an analogue camera. Christophe van Biesen & Alfonso Salgueiro Lora

If you want to learn from the professionals based in Luxembourg, van Biesen, and Visit Luxembourg photographer Salgueiro, team up to offer courses including on-location workshops in Mullerthal, Minette region, the Upper-Sûre Lake and Luxembourg City, plus special trips such as to the bluebell forest of Hallerbos, Belgium.

Both also offer 1 to 1 tuition, or in private groups of up to 3 people for full or half-days, plus online courses such as a post processing course in Adobe Lightroom. Van Biesen also ffers a two-hour intensive class for beginners to learn the basics and create images.

Lifelong learning photography

If you’re looking for something local and are prepared to do your course in French or Luxembourgish, then Lifelong learning offers a number of debutant courses in the city, Dippach, Dudelange, Grevenmacher and Sandweiler.

Dominique Gaul – D’Millen, Beckerich

Photography courses for beginners at the mill house in Beckerich, Gaul is a professional photographer, who has exhibited in the region and organises the Arlon Photographic Meetings. His workshops will teach you how to know and use your camera, and the different types of photography from landscape, portrait, lights and materials, to movement. A combination of theory and practise in each leseson.

You’ll need to bring your camera, and explanations are in French, with more information at info@dmillen.lu.

The Second Degree asbl – Robin Jensen

Starting with beginners and outdoor photography, or learning essential photoshop, on Robin Jensen’s courses with The Second Degree aslb. A professional photographer, Jensen has been teaching courses for 15 years. There is nothing listed for the coming term, but you can check again in September.

The Photography Academy

This place has a number of classes listed. Online courses include camera settings, aperture and depth of field, speed and movement, light and focus, or just a review of all photography techniques. You can also book 1 to 1 sessions.

There are teen courses on self portraits, creative photography and using your smartphone for photography for instagram. You’ll find a full list, including post-photography workshops, here.

MUDAM

Check out the MUDAM events listings as from time to time they hold workshops for adults on photography, and for children aged 9-12 years as part of Mudam mini.

The Luxembourg Street Photography Festival

Hosted at Rotondes on18-21 May 2023, this festival includes lectures, interviews, workshops and panel discussions or you can catch an exhibition.

Luxembourg Federation of Photographic Art (FLPA)

Affiliated to the International Federation of Photographic Art, the FLPA is an umbrella organisation for about 35 photography clubs and associations that organise exhibitions and events as well as photography workshops.

The National Audiovisual Centre (CNA)

The CNA offers audiovisual courses for adults and children on subjects such as making web documentaries and multimedia storytelling. It also runs Vision Lab for students at school or university in Luxembourg to learn about all things visual such as green screen or portrait photography. Other photography festivals and workshops

EMOP has taken over from Cafe Creme to organise the bi-annual European Month of Photography festival, which the last one took place in 2023 in May. Fototrade holds a number of events including Demo Days.
