Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1797 ~ 1861) was a popular ukiyo-e artist who excelled in various genres and remains popular among contemporary audiences. While he has been introduced in various ways before, this exhibition will be the first in history to exclusively showcase Utagawa’s fan paintings.

Fans were essential items for Edo citizens to endure the summer heat, but they were also stylish accessories for enjoying the design and important merchandise for Kabuki fans. Fan paintings, or uchiwa-e, used to make these fans, were also quite popular, and Kuniyoshi actively engaged in creating them. Despite being consumable items, there are few extant examples, and in this exhibition, we will introduce approximately 220 works, including about 100 pieces being exhibited for the first time. Please enjoy the delightful and refreshing world of Kuniyoshi’s fan paintings, a realm visually enjoyable and cool, yet often overlooked.

First Half: June 1st (Saturday) to June 25th (Tuesday)
Second Half: June 29th (Saturday) to July 28th (Sunday)
*All exhibits will be changed between the first and second halves.
