FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — In 2009, hobbyist photographer Kevin Mullett (“two ‘T’s’, he notes, not like the fish or the haircut”) just wanted some practice with his new camera and Chalk Walk seemed like a good spot.
So good, he has returned almost every year to the Three Rivers Festival affiliated event, sponsored and hosted by the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, 311 E. Main Street.
While trying to capture the chalk work itself was challenging – super-harsh lighting, shiny pavement and thousands of people – Mullett said he quickly noticed the colorful blurring of the art and artists was the real draw.
“In the beginning, I was just looking for an excuse to go out and snap pictures,” he said. “Later. it became being on the lookout of something that’s worth taking a photo of. And to me, that was the artist doing the artwork, not the final product of the artwork, which speaks for itself.”
Mullett said he spends most of his time photographing nature, which people can find, along with the Chalk Walk photos, on his Facebook page.
While Chalk Walk technically is scheduled to start Friday evening after Main Street is closed, Mullett said he usually times his Saturday arrival to the weather.
And he would like more photographers to join him to celebrate the chalk artists.
“I want the artists to be front and center here because what they’re doing is amazing. It would be nice to see more photographers down here, lifting up not only the event, but the artists that are sharing their artwork with us.”
