St Alkmund’s Church hosted Russian pianist Nikita Lukinov at the weekend for a recital of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at at Exhibition and a showcase of children’s artwork

A wonderful musical experience for children of all ages, with young Russian piano star Nikita Lukinov – ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ on a Sunday afternoon at the end of June qualified as a very special event indeed, with a large audience despite competition from Shrewsbury Food Festival and a certain football game!

St Alkmund’s Church in Shrewsbury had been decorated with colourful pictures based on the music, provided by children from Martin Wilson, Woodside and Welshampton primary schools, and a competition was held, though it was clear that producing the varied art was reward enough for the 9 to 11-year-olds. The winner  (Maria) was on hand to receive her applause.

The pictures remain in view in the church for one week – but the event itself will live longer in the memory. Nikita poured heart and soul into an expert performance, with commentary from Jeremy Lund.

Nikita had indeed been warned about evil witch Baba Yaga as a child, and his ‘Great Gate of Kiev’ was magnificent. These two pictures were also those most favoured by the young artists. We are looking forward to next year’s Shrewsbury Music Festival – keep your eyes open for news here at ‘My Shrewsbury’.
