An art exhibit designed to give people “a feeling of awe for the planet” is on display this week.
The touring artwork ‘Gaia’ was unveiled to the public yesterday in Birkenhead Park and will be on display until later today.
The floating planet earth replica, which was created by artist Luke Jerram, measures seven meters across its diameter and slowly rotates, just like the earth itself.

Gaia has been installed near the northeast entrance of Birkenhead Park. According to the artist, the installation aims to create the same sense of awe for the planet that astronauts feel when they are in space, including “a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment”.
The artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real earth. By standing 211m away from the artwork, the public will be able to see the Earth as it appears from the moon.
Alongside Gaia, a number of community cultural events have been organised in Birkenhead Park this week, bringing together local artists and community groups year as part of Wirral’s year as Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture 2024.
