If laughter really is the best medicine, then artist Amanda Sadler, known by her creative alias ASads, might just be Townsville’s most joyful healer.
From her base at Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts, Amanda has turned the traditional life drawing class into a lively, laughter-filled celebration that’s fast becoming a must-do for hens parties, birthdays and milestone events.
“I’m excited to bring fun and a bit of mischief to our community in the form of art,” Amanda says.
“Life drawing parties are a little taboo, classy, creative and a lot of fun. Making all guests feel included and welcome underpins the energy I like to share with each party.”
Part art class, part celebration, the Life Drawing Hens Parties combine elegance and cheekiness in equal measure.
Over two hours, guests sip, snack and sketch inside Umbrella’s contemporary gallery space, surrounded by current exhibitions, professional easels, and a live model.
“Our model Matt is fun,” Amanda laughs. “We banter throughout the event. Playful and mischievous humour helps guests relax and enjoy the creative process.”
She says even the most hesitant participants soon loosen up.
“I feel like guests may think they can’t draw, but once they see it’s about having fun, celebrating together and making memories, everyone can enjoy the experience.”
The parties are designed to be as inclusive as they are entertaining, complete with all materials supplied and time to sip and chat between sketches.
As one recent guest put it, “It was an afternoon filled with laughter, creativity and the chance to learn some new skills along the way. I’d highly recommend it!”
For Amanda, who has spent more than two decades teaching art and drama, the events are about more than just a good time.
“I’d love guests to feel like they’ve added to their ‘I can’t believe I got to do that’ memory bank,” she says.
“Maybe even igniting a passion to draw or create again.”
Behind the laughter and light-hearted fun is a serious artist.
Through her ASads persona, Amanda explores hope, resilience and beauty through her mixed-media works, art that emerged from deeply personal experiences.
Her acclaimed 2023 series The Pursuit of Happiness marked a turning point in her career, transforming trauma into joy and colour.
As both educator and artist, she knows the power of creativity to connect people.
“Where art is cheeky and tasteful all at once,” Amanda says. “That’s where the magic happens.”
