Initially, Komatsubara’s awareness of space was focused on covering the walls that defined the space with his drawings. However, questioning the inability to enter the inside of the space while being able to touch the outside led him to try a new approach in his 2018 solo exhibition “Building the Nest.” Here, he created three-dimensional structures using bamboo and scrap materials, incorporating drawings onto these structures. After various explorations, one of his significant achievements was presenting three-dimensional drawing works using resin and a 3D pen at the “Mind Trail – Oku Yamato Museum in Your Mind” art festival for three consecutive years starting in 2020. Since his last solo exhibition, Komatsubara has been meticulously reexamining all the elements of his recent expanded expressions.
This exhibition will mainly feature works focusing on his approach to space, which he has been developing since his 2018 solo exhibition at our gallery. Although he works on three-dimensional pieces, the core of his expression remains drawing. He seeks to liberate the act of placing a brush or pen within a confined two-dimensional space. It seems his current intent is to juxtapose drawing and painting, aiming to dismantle their boundaries.
This exhibition marks a significant milestone in Komatsubara’s ongoing journey, which he has been exploring since 2018, in constructing his next phase of expression.
