Mangaluru: A collective of artists is set to display their artwork, which includes drawings and sketches, focusing on the rich heritage of Mangaluru. This exhibition is a part of their ongoing effort to document and conserve the city’s cultural legacy. Organized by the Mangaluru chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and the Art Kanara Trust, the showcase will highlight various aspects of Mangaluru’s unique identity, such as heritage buildings, temples, century old streets, rivers, sea and other structures. The artists embarked on this project in September 2022, coinciding with the World River Day, and have been diligently working on capturing the essence of Mangaluru through their art. The exhibition – ‘Combing Kudla with Pens and Brushes’ is scheduled to commence at the Kodialguthu Centre for Art and Culture, Kodialguthu on May 18 and will remain open till May 25. Artist Rajendra Kedige, one of the organizers, told TOI that five artists — Harish Kodialbail, Jeevan Salian, Santhosh Andrade, Syed Asif Ali, and Wilson Souza — will showcase 45 drawings and sketches on the century-old heritage of Mangaluru during the exhibition. Senior journalist Jayanth Kodkani will be the guest at the inaugural ceremony, he said. “Artists commenced the project on World River Day by capturing rivers and the essence of fishermen villages. Thereafter, they created drawings and sketches of the Old DC Office, University College, Mangalore (formerly known as Government College), Kadri Manjunatha Temple, century-old streets like Bunder and Car Street, Flower Market of Car Street, Collector’s Bungalow, Museum, Sultan Battery, river, and other selected locations to portray the heritage of Mangaluru,” he said. All the 45 drawings and sketches will be on display. The artists have created the drawings and sketches on handmade paper using pens, inks, watercolours, and brushes. They have used their own style of art to illustrate the heritage on paper, Kedige said. “They have visited the places and created most of the artwork on the spot. Meanwhile, some of the drawings and sketches were also created from their studios using the photographs they captured from the spots. We have plans to publish a book comprising those drawings and sketches with the history of the heritage of Mangaluru in the next phase,” he added.
