Here’s a unique opportunity to own a piece of art history: An East Hampton home once owned by renowned American artist Saul Steinberg has hit the market.
Steinberg, best known for his work with the New Yorker magazine, owned the home on Old Stone Highway. The property, which blends historic charm with modern amenities in a prime Hamptons location, is now listed for $4.1 million.
Over a career spanning six decades, Steinberg created over 80 covers and contributed more than 600 drawings to the New Yorker, helping to shape the magazine’s visual identity.
His most famous piece, the 1976 cover “View of the World from 9th Avenue,” humorously depicted a New York-centric worldview and became an iconic image of the era.
In 1959, Steinberg purchased the home after learning about it from his friend, Italian sculptor Costantino Nivola.
Over the years, he expanded the property by acquiring additional lots. Initially working in the living room, Steinberg built a studio on the property in 1973, complementing his New York City studio.
Although the studio has since been renovated into additional bedrooms, the home still retains much of its original charm.
The Springs, where the property is located, has long attracted artists with its inspiring landscape and proximity to the water. Steinberg’s home became a gathering place for notable artists and writers, including Willem de Kooning, Aldo Buzzi and Harold Rosenberg.
Upon Steinberg’s passing in 1999, he left the property to his niece, who is now selling the home.
