Gallery Hirota Fine Art will be holding a solo exhibition titled “Drawings of the Heartstrings” from August 23 (Fri) to September 7 (Sat). This will be Fumi Abe’s first solo exhibition in about four years.

In this exhibition, Abe shifts from her long-standing theme of “faces” to the more abstract theme of “heartstrings.” She will present two new series of works titled “Drawings of the Skin” and “Breathing Underwater.”

Her new abstract works are created through a meticulous process of drawing and erasing lines on paper with a pencil, then drawing over them again and again until she is satisfied. These pieces, which also incorporate oil pastels and watercolors, reveal a gentle and profound otherworldliness that seems to reflect her spiritual heartstrings.

The concept of “heartstrings” has been present in her work for many years. The countless lines that make up her new abstract style are uniquely her own, meticulously drawn as she confronts and contemplates herself.

Additionally, a catalog titled “Fumi Abe” summarizing her recent works will be produced in conjunction with the exhibition. This catalog will be available for purchase at the gallery and online store during the exhibition. Approximately 15 selected pieces from the nearly 50 works she has created in recent years will be on display.
