RALEIGH, N.C. — A larger-than-life sculpture is drawing crowds and photographers at Dix Park.
The enormous piece of secular art sits gracefully amid the campus’ historical buildings, providing contrast between the new and old.
Created by internationally acclaimed sculptor DeWitt Godfrey, the mammoth sculpture, named “Attun,” is composed of 80 steel cylinders and stands at an impressive 18-feet-tall and 150-feet-long. It greets visitors at Dix Park’s historic entry along Boylan Avenue, weaving along the iconic landscape near antique buildings. In the background, the City of Raleigh skyline watches over from behind the trees.
Already visitors have begun wandering through the tunnels and holes of the enormous artwork.
“As its size suggests, ‘Attun’ is meant to be explored,” the description explains. “Visitors to Dix Park are invited to wander through its vastness to truly experience the piece.”
On his social media pages, Godfrey’s other larger-than-life sculptures flow similarly into majestic landscapes, creating unexpected moments of exploration and adventure or a new perspective on an otherwise familiar natural space.
“Dix Park has a long and complex history, and I am moved that my work will be part of this special, reimagined space for the diverse communities of Raleigh,” said Godfrey. “I hope my work leaves viewers with a sense of wonder, an urge to explore and a renewed spirit of inquiry and discovery.”
If you love larger-than-life art, prepare for two giant trolls to make Dix Park their home in the future, too. Dix Park Conservancy will bring in the world’s leading recycle artist Thomas Dambo, who has giant trolls made of reclaimed wood that have attracted a following around the globe in October of 2025.
