A renowned artist is set to launch a book of his paintings to mark his 85th birthday.

Brian Campbell, who has lived in Wigton since 1962, has put together a selection of his works, showcasing his love for north Cumbria and parts of Scotland.

The book will be launched at the Fountain Gallery in Wigton on May 16.

Mr Campbell, who trained at Carlisle and Liverpool Colleges of Art, has had a long and varied career.

He initially specialised in book illustration and has since contributed to numerous exhibitions, produced pictorial calendars, illustrated poems, and created stained-glass designs for the Bragg family windows in St Mary’s Parish Church, Wigton.

His work is known for its visual authenticity, a reflection of his admiration for the north Cumbrian district, from the fells to the Solway coast.

He has also been a permanent exhibitor at Wigton’s Fountain Gallery, which he helped establish in 2011.

The new book, which is a tribute to his life-long love for the region, is dedicated to his wife, Jeanne, in recognition of her “unfailing support and assistance.”

Mr Campbell’s lifelong mantra is: “An act of description is an act of praise”. The book is being published with grateful appreciation to the various owners of the paintings.

In a personal touch, Mr Campbell will be at the launch event, signing copies of the book for the public from 10am to 1pm.
